Appearance: Morty is of fairly average height and build - in fact, he's mostly average, appearance-wise. He manages to be good-looking without being remarkable. He has brown eyes, and his blond hair, usually held back by a blue headband, reaches about to the nape of his neck. He generally wears blue and yellow clothing, although for reasons best known to himself he also wears a thin black choker.
Personality: Morty is a good-natured soul, almost always kind and friendly. He's very seldom in a rush, and is always ready to see or try something new, or share what he knows. He gives the impression of never quite having gotten over the initial surprise of being born, and always keeps his sense of wonder. It always irks him slightly that ghosts have such a bad reputation, though.
Like all good trainers, he doesn't see his Pokemon as tools or possessions; he sees them as partners, friends... perhaps even family. He believes that a Pokemon can be "yours" only in the same way that you'd refer to a family member as "yours" - you are, equally, "theirs".
Abilities: Morty is the leader of Ecruteak City's gym, and is one of the best trainers of Ghost-type Pokemon in Johto. He has some level of psychic ability, being able to see into the near future and locate lost items (basically, he's a living itemfinder). He is also an expert on the history of the Johto region, particularly Ecruteak City, and on legendary Pokemon; he's blessed with a natural patience that makes him a good teacher.
Weapons: Morty's a trainer, so his strength lies with his Pokemon. When they're with him, they are capable of putting an opponent to sleep and causing nightmares, creating illusions, and using an opponent's own fear to damage them. Without them, however, he's more or less weaponless - his psychic abilities are mostly divinatory in nature.
Weaknesses: Morty's main weakness is overconfidence, an unsurprising vice - many Pokemon are powerless against the Ghost type, and Morty occasionally falls into the trap of believing his Pokemon to be invincible. He also tends to be skeptical of claims outside his experience - again unsurprising, since Morty doesn't often encounter anything outside his experience.

History: Morty has lived in Ecruteak City all his life, and he's been fascinated by the place's history and legends for most of it - the rainbow-colored bird Pokemon that's said to have perched on the Tin Tower, the legendary beasts supposedly imprisoned in the basement of the Burned Tower, and others. Morty is one of the few people alive to possess some of his knowledge of Ecruteak's history, and teaches whatever he can to some of the children of the town. His life's ambition is to see the rainbow Pokemon, a mystical being called Ho-oh; the creature's power is so strong that his clairvoyance is blocked out.
Somewhere along the way, Morty developed a natural rapport with Ghost-type Pokemon. Training both the Pokemon he captured and his own latent psychic abilities, he has ascended to the level of his city's Gym Leader, and possesses the sole authority to confer the Fog Badge, generally considered the fourth of the eight badges in rank, on a trainer aspiring to the Pokemon League. Morty isn't proud, though, and spends as much time in the ruins of the Burned Tower as he does in his gym.
In fact, Morty was in the Burned Tower the day three young trainers from Kanto, to the east, stumbled in - they'd mistaken the place for the gym. More surprising, two of them were Leaders in Kanto themselves. The third, a boy from Pallet Town named Ash, was collecting badges, and claimed to have seen Ho-oh himself. Morty was skeptical about this - until he saw Ash's skill and determination in rescuing his Pikachu from Team Rocket and, later, battling Morty himself. When the boy's Noctowl won the match by piercing the ghosts' illusions with Foresight, Morty happily handed over the Fog Badge, conceding that someone with Ash's strength of spirit may well have looked on the legendary bird. He met the trio once more - he was studying legendary Pokemon with Eusine, a man obsessed with the swift-running water Pokemon called Suicune, and the three young trainers were passing through on their way to Mahogany Town. The five of them thwarted Team Rocket again (not that this is a difficult task), retrieving a set of sacred bells from the Tin Tower. Shortly after the trio left for Mahogany Town and Eusine took off in search of Suicune, Morty was brought to Econtra.
Unfortunately, he wasn't in a position to bring the Pokeballs in which the ghosts were stored. He had, in fact, just gotten dressed for the day.
